На маршрутном знаке [ route signs] и на карте отмечена знаком в форме щита со словом [INTERSTATE], номером и иногда названием штата, причем четные номера присвоены дорогам, идущим с востока на запад, а нечетные - с севера на юг. 7 Interstate Highway System
Официальное название - Национальная система междуштатных и оборонных автострад [National System of Interstate and Defense Highways]. Система транзитных скоростных многорядных автомагистралей [ expressway] с ограниченным доступом. Создана по Закону о федеральном финансировании строительства автодорог 1956 года [Federal Aid Highway Act]. Было запланировано строительство дорог общей длиной в 40 тыс. миль (64 374 км). 90 процентов средств на строительство поступали из специального федерального фонда дорожного развития [Highway Trust Fund] (федеральные налоги на горюче-смазочные материалы и транспортные средства), 10 процентов - из бюджета штатов (налоги на строительство и содержание дорог). Более поздние законодательные акты намного увеличили планируемую длину магистралей. К началу 1990-х гг. их протяженность составила 68 200 км. Скоростные автострады соединили все штаты континентальной части США и города с населением более 50 тыс. человек. Хотя федеральные автомагистрали составляют немногим более 1 процента общей протяженности автодорог страны, на их долю приходится 20 процентов автопотока. Автострадам, идущим с востока на запад, присвоены четные номера, с севера на юг - нечетные. Основные трансконтинентальные автострады (идущие с востока на запад) носят номера: 10, 20, 40, 70, 80 и 90 (начиная счет на юге), а основные меридиональные автострады - номера 5, 15, 25, 35, 55, 65, 75 и 95 (начиная счет от Тихоокеанского побережья).English-Russian dictionary of regional studies > Interstate Highway System

Магистраль, ведущая из г. Нью-Йорка [ New York City] в г. Буффало [ Buffalo] и к Ниагарскому водопаду [ Niagara Falls], пересекает наиболее населенные части штата.
